OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney held two high-level discussions on July 29, 2025, underscoring Canada’s international engagement on trade and global security. The Prime Minister spoke separately with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to advance key bilateral priorities.
Strengthening Canada-Singapore Trade Relations
During the call with Prime Minister Wong, both leaders recognized the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Singapore. They discussed ways to deepen economic cooperation, particularly within the framework of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Trade expansion in agri-food exports and nuclear energy development was highlighted as an area of mutual interest. Both prime ministers also welcomed ongoing progress toward a Canada-ASEAN free trade agreement, noting the opportunity to advance discussions further during the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia this October.

Continued Canadian Support for Ukraine
In his conversation with President Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Carney condemned Russia’s overnight attacks on southeastern Ukraine, extending condolences to victims of the strikes. The leaders emphasized the need for a just and lasting peace, while reiterating Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction efforts.

A $2.3 billion loan to help rebuild Ukraine’s infrastructure and public systems,

New sanctions targeting Russia’s shadow fleet and energy revenues, aimed at cutting off financial support for Moscow’s war efforts.
The two leaders also discussed Ukraine’s anti-corruption legislation, with Carney stressing the importance of safeguarding the independence of the country’s oversight institutions as Ukraine advances its governance reforms.
Prime Minister Carney and President Zelenskyy agreed to maintain close contact in the weeks ahead as the conflict and diplomatic efforts continue.
