According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney thanked Starmer for his condolences following the shootings in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, last week. The exchange underscored the close diplomatic ties between the two NATO allies.
Expanding Trade and Economic Collaboration
The leaders discussed strengthening economic partnerships, including intensified collaboration through the Canada-UK Economic and Trade Working Group. Ongoing work is focused on key sectors such as digital trade, critical minerals, and sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The discussion also touched on broader trade architecture, including developments involving the European Union and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Canada and the UK have been deepening bilateral trade engagement since the UK’s departure from the European Union, with both governments pursuing frameworks that enhance long-term certainty for businesses and investors.
For Canadian industries, particularly in advanced manufacturing, technology, and critical minerals, closer Canada-UK alignment presents opportunities for expanded export markets and investment flows.
Defence, Security and the Proposed DSR Bank
A significant portion of the call centred on defence and security cooperation. Prime Minister Carney underscored Canada’s efforts to establish a Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSR Bank), a proposed financing mechanism designed to provide multi-year, low-cost funding for defence and security investments.
The DSR Bank would aim to unlock private capital to support defence and security firms across the supply chain, including advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure resilience. The initiative aligns with Canada’s broader strategy to strengthen domestic defence capabilities while supporting allied coordination.
Both leaders agreed to task their respective teams with advancing collaboration on this objective and ensuring alignment between Canadian and UK efforts.
NATO and Transatlantic Stability
As long-standing NATO allies, Canada and the UK continue to coordinate closely on transatlantic security matters. While no specific operational decisions were announced, the call reflects sustained cooperation amid a complex global security environment.
The two prime ministers agreed to remain in close contact as discussions progress.
The bilateral conversation reinforces Canada’s stated objective of diversifying trade relationships, strengthening defence partnerships, and deepening ties with reliable allies in an increasingly uncertain global landscape.
