OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Washington, D.C., on May 5 for his first official visit as Prime Minister, where he is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald J. Trump on May 6.
The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed Friday that the meeting will focus on immediate trade pressures as well as the long-term economic and security partnership between Canada and the United States. The visit comes at a critical moment in North American relations, with trade and border security expected to top the agenda.
The two leaders last spoke by phone following Carney’s election win, during which they discussed the importance of continuing cooperation on mutual priorities. The upcoming in-person meeting is expected to further define the Carney government’s diplomatic approach to the U.S., Canada’s largest trading partner.
President Trump and I have agreed to meet next Tuesday in Washington.
We’ll focus on addressing immediate trade pressures — and the future economic and security relationship between our two sovereign nations.

While few details have been released about the bilateral itinerary, the trip signals a formal re-engagement between Ottawa and Washington under new Canadian leadership. Carney has previously indicated his desire to preserve strong cross-border economic ties while navigating policy differences with the Trump administration.
This marks Carney’s first visit to the U.S. as Prime Minister and is expected to include meetings with senior American officials in addition to the session with President Trump.
