Carney Vaisakhi statement highlights Sikh Heritage Month and community contributions

OTTAWA  — Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement Tuesday marking Vaisakhi, one of the most sacred observances in Sikhism, while also recognizing Sikh Heritage Month in Canada.

Vaisakhi commemorates the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, a defining moment in Sikh history that established a collective identity grounded in justice, service, and faith. In his statement, the Prime Minister acknowledged the importance of the day for Sikh communities across Canada and around the world.

Vaisakhi marks faith, identity, and renewal

Carney highlighted the spiritual significance of Vaisakhi as both a religious milestone and a celebration of renewal. The day is widely observed through prayer and reflection, as well as community gatherings that honour Sikh traditions and values.

He also noted the agricultural roots of the celebration, describing Vaisakhi as a spring harvest festival that represents gratitude for hard work and perseverance.

Sikh Heritage Month recognized across Canada

The Prime Minister’s statement also emphasized the broader significance of April as Sikh Heritage Month in Canada, an annual opportunity to recognize the history, culture, and contributions of Sikh Canadians.

Sikh communities have played a key role in shaping Canada’s social and economic landscape, contributing through entrepreneurship, public service, and community leadership. The concept of seva, or selfless service, was highlighted as a defining principle reflected in these contributions.

A message of unity and appreciation

Carney concluded his statement by extending well wishes to those celebrating, recognizing Vaisakhi as a moment to reflect on shared values and community strength.

“I wish everyone celebrating a happy Vaisakhi,” the Prime Minister said.
