The Prime Minister emphasized that King Charles III’s visit comes nearly 70 years after a reigning monarch last opened Parliament in Canada, calling the moment a “historic honour” reflective of Canada’s evolving democracy and enduring institutions.
“It speaks to our enduring tradition and friendship, to the vitality of our constitutional monarchy and our distinct identity, and to the historic ties that crises only fortify,” Carney said.
The Royal Visit is expected to include engagements at Rideau Hall, community-focused appearances, and ceremonial duties in the capital. The visit coincides with the opening of the 45th Parliament of Canada, which Carney described as a pivotal moment for the country.
In his statement, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Canada’s identity as a nation rooted in English, French, and Indigenous heritage — now transformed into a bold, bilingual, multicultural society that remains committed to reconciliation.
Carney also previewed the Speech from the Throne, which he said will outline the government’s plans to:
-
Define a new economic and security relationship with the United States
-
Build the strongest economy in the G7
-
Bring down the cost of living
-
Keep communities safe
