OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney held two key diplomatic calls Wednesday, underscoring his government’s early focus on global stability and international trade. The newly elected leader spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Council President António Costa on April 30, 2025.
Carney Reaffirms Support for Ukraine Amid Russian Invasion
During his call with President Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Carney reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s continued aggression. Zelenskyy congratulated Carney on his election win, while both leaders agreed that a durable peace must involve Ukraine directly at the table.
The two heads of state committed to maintaining close communication and are expected to meet at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, this June.
Strengthening Canada-EU Economic Ties
In a separate call with European Council President António Costa, Carney emphasized Canada’s role as a stable and reliable economic partner. Both leaders expressed a shared commitment to deepening Canada–European Union trade relations, building on the foundation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
The call signals Carney’s intention to fortify transatlantic partnerships as part of his broader foreign policy agenda.
