June may be officially recognized as National Adopt a Cat Month, but for shelters across the Greater Toronto Area, the real work continues long after the hashtags fade.

As kitten season stretches through the summer, local shelters remain over capacity with cats and kittens waiting for homes. The adoption campaigns may have brought attention in June, but the surge in animal intake — especially mother cats with litters — doesn’t end with the calendar.

Kitten Season: What It Means for Shelters

Each year, warmer months bring an overwhelming number of feline surrenders and stray litters. This “kitten season” creates a persistent strain on shelter resources, with more animals arriving than there are available homes or foster caregivers.

Shelters and rescue organizations across the GTA are seeing an ongoing influx of nursing mothers, bottle-fed newborns, and semi-feral kittens requiring socialization. Many of these cats are adoptable, healthy, and affectionate — they’re just waiting for someone to give them a chance.

The Quiet Crisis After the Campaigns

Adoption promotions during June often help clear space temporarily, but once the spotlight fades, the reality sets in: most shelters are still full. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to care for these animals, but space, time, and funding are limited.

That’s why animal advocates are urging people not to wait until next year’s campaign to act. If you’ve been considering adding a cat to your family, now is the time.

How You Can Help — Even If You Can’t Adopt

  • Foster: Even short-term fosters help create space and save lives.

  • Donate: Supplies like food, litter, and cleaning products go a long way.

  • Share: Promoting adoptable cats on social media increases their chances of finding homes.

  • Spay & Neuter: Helping reduce the stray cat population begins with prevention.

Local shelters in Oakville, Milton, Toronto, Peel, and York all have cats and kittens available now. Many offer meet-and-greet visits and waived or reduced fees during summer months.
