City Manager Peter Wallace to depart City of Toronto

City Manager Peter Wallace today announced that he will be leaving the City of Toronto effective March 29 to accept the position of Secretary of the Treasury Board with the Government of Canada.

Wallace joined the City in July 2015 following the retirement of former City Manager Joe Pennachetti. During his tenure as City Manager, Wallace oversaw the development and approval of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 City Budgets, negotiated with provincial partners on the integration of SmartTrack stations and successfully achieved new labour contracts with the City’s unions.

“As head of the Toronto Public Service, Peter has set a tone of absolute professionalism and raised the bar on customer service excellence by helping to transform City services to meet the needs of a modern city,” said Mayor John Tory. “I enjoyed a close working relationship with Peter and appreciated his strategic and thoughtful advice. He has a tremendous opportunity with the Government of Canada and I wish him well in his new leadership position.”

“It has been a privilege to serve Council and the residents of our great city,” said Wallace. “I want to thank Mayor Tory, Council and all of the many professional and dedicated staff for their tireless work on behalf of the residents and businesses of Toronto. I remain passionate about the role of municipal government in meeting the needs of our citizens and making a real difference in people’s lives.”

Wallace joined the City following a stint as an Ontario Public Service Visiting Fellow at the University of Toronto’s School of Public Policy and Governance. Prior to that, he had a distinguished 32-year career in the Ontario Public Service where he served as Secretary of the Cabinet, head of the Ontario Public Service and Clerk of the Executive Council. He also held a number of senior executive roles including Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary of Treasury Board, Deputy Minister of Energy, Assistant Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Assistant Deputy Minister, Management Board Secretariat.

Wallace serves on the Board of Trustees of the University Health Network, the Board of Directors of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, as a member of the United Way Toronto & York Region Campaign Cabinet, and recently served on the Principal’s Commission on the Future of Public Policy at Queen’s University. He is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

To ensure a smooth transition and ongoing leadership as the City moves toward the 2018 Election and completes this term of Council, Wallace has recommended that Giuliana Carbone, Deputy City Manager for Cluster A, be appointed City Manager effective March 30, 2018, on an interim basis while recruitment of a permanent City Manager is completed and approved by Council.
