The City of Mississauga is pleased to share that Daniela Paraschiv, Manager of Energy Management and Facilities Maintenance, has received the Save on Energy 2021 Energy Manager of the Year Award from The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) for the second time in her career.
The award recognizes the effort and dedication the City has shown to create a more sustainable and energy-efficient workplace. Paraschiv is the only Energy Manager in Ontario to receive this recognition twice from the IESO, receiving her first award in 2018.
“On behalf of the City, we’re proud of Daniela and extend our congratulations to her,” said Shari Lichterman, Commissioner, Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer. “Our energy conservation plan calls for a one per cent energy consumption reduction every year and as a team, we have exceeded this target almost every year, and have achieved many successes in moving forward with our plans to deliver on the City’s energy and climate change mandate.”
The City has set energy conservation targets outlined in its Five Year Energy Conservation Plan (2019-2023) and Climate Change Action Plan to achieve a 40 per cent reduction in energy by 2030 and 80 per cent by 2050.
The following achievements formed the basis for Paraschiv receiving the award:
- Identifying energy conservation opportunities and implementing energy retrofit projects, such as pool drain water heat recovery and dehumidification unit recommissioning, LED lighting retrofit and Building Automation System recommissioning.
- Effectively using high-efficiency technology for City lifecycle capital renewal projects, such as variable refrigerant flow (VRF) technology, high-efficiency boilers, hybrid heat pumps and high efficiency roof top units.
- Implementing operational best practices and ongoing energy performance monitoring.
- Leading the Energy Management team and seeing the City achieve a 10 per cent reduction in overall energy use, a nine per cent reduction in green house gas (GHG) emissions and a 17 per cent reduction in water use – totalling $2,347,000 in savings.
- Spearheading energy efficiency/conservation plans and standard operating procedures outlined in the City’s Five Year Energy Conservation Plan (2019-2023).
- Working to achieve an ENERGY STAR® Certification for Erin Mills Twin Arena (2019, 2020 and 2022) as well as an ISO 50001 certification, making Mississauga the first Canadian municipality to receive this certification.

The Energy Manager of the Year Awards celebrate Ontario’s most innovative professional energy managers who deliver lasting value to organizations across the province.
