City of Toronto working to support Danforth BIA initiatives all summer long

Scenes from the Taste of the Danforth Street Festival in Toronto

The City of Toronto is supporting Business Improvement Areas on the Danforth to bring localized events to the Danforth this summer. Various initiatives will bring music, food and vibrancy to the east end community for all to enjoy.

Through the Main Street Recovery and Rebuild Initiative (MRRI) and FedDev Ontario, the City provided a grant to the GreekTown on the Danforth Business Improvement Area (BIA) for $25,000 to host an extended summer and fall music festival in GreekTown called “Sounds of GreekTown.” Events will run from Thursday, August 4 through Sunday, September 25 and include a selection of musical acts performing in two-hour slots at the colonnade in the Alexander the Great Parkette at Danforth Avenue and Logan Avenue – a landmark for the neighbourhood.

Weekly music performances in Alexander the Great Parkette will take place:
•       Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m.
•       Friday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m.
•       Saturday evenings 7 to 9 p.m.
•       Sunday afternoons from 3 to 5 p.m.

Through the City’s Amplified Live Music on Patios (AMP) program, live music has also been added to three curb lane patios on Danforth at Eaton Avenue on Fridays from 8 to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 8 to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m., programmed by the BIAs. An additional location in the CaféTO parklet at Gough and Danforth Avenues will have programming on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The City, through MRRI, also provided the Broadview Danforth BIA with a $25,000 grant for a music series called “DB Beats,” which has already begun and will continue to run all summer long in selected curb lane patios and parkettes along the BIA.

The City’s Music Office will provide both BIAs with music programming suggestions from its Toronto artist database as needed. The City is also continuing to work collaboratively with all BIAs on community festivals.

Small retail businesses are essential to the vitality and success of Toronto’s main streets and neighbourhoods and are key drivers of economic prosperity for residents, families, communities and the city as a whole. To assist small businesses in Toronto to recover from the impacts of COVID-19, the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), is providing up to $18 million for six programs making up the Toronto Main Street Recovery and Rebuild Initiative (MRRI).
