TORONTO and OTTAWAOct. 31, 2018 /CNW/ – The Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee remain hopeful that Calgary’s city council will vote to continue the bid process for Calgary 2026 and allow Calgarians to have the voice they were expecting by moving forward with the scheduled November 13 plebiscite.

Further negotiations should continue with the Federal Government and the Province of Alberta on an agreement to provide financial support for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The Calgary 2026 Bid Corporation has, from the start, worked to identify ways to limit and control costs while proposing Games that reflect the highest standards of the Paralympic and Olympic movements. These Games would showcase the best of Canadians to Canadians on the international stage.

The Olympic and Paralympic movements contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination. The 1988 Games inspired a generation of future Olympians and Paralympians who competed for our country in PyeongChang, resulting in the best medal count in Canadian Winter Olympic and Paralympic history. With a vision and determination, the 1988 Games united our country and left an indelible legacy of foresight and success that have benefited CalgaryCanmore, Alberta, and the entire country to this very day. Then, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games brought our nation together again from coast to coast to coast in a celebration of unprecedented patriotism, friendship, solidarity and fair play. We showed all Canadians and the world who we are, what we can accomplish and what we believe in. A home Games in 2026, will inspire a new generation of Olympians and Paralympians and show the world once again the best of Canada.

The COC and CPC ask the city councillors to remember what the Games will mean for Canadians and to embrace the opportunity to renew and create new legacies for generations to come.
