Brooklin High School student wins silver medal in sledge hockey
The Ontario ParaSports Games were February 8-10. It was the first time for the Durham Region to host the Games. Many Durham District School Board (DDSB) students showed off their athletic abilities and participated in this year’s Games. Robert Forbes from Brooklin High School was one of those student-athletes, competing in sledge hockey.
“I love the sport and when I got the opportunity to play during the ParaSport Games, I really wanted to do it,” shares Forbes.
Forbes is a Grade 11 student and he played right-wing on the Ontario North Sledge Hockey Team during the ParaSport Games. He has cerebral palsy and he has not let anything stop him from reaching his goals. In his spare time, he can be found on the ice with the Durham Steelhawks every Sunday. Sledge hockey is one of his passions.
Some of the sports featured at the Games were sitting volleyball, sledge hockey, boccia, 5-a-side soccer and much more. Students, families and community organizations came out to show their support for the participants.
Shiny Silver
Forbes said that he loved playing at this level and seeing everyone in the crowd cheering with such passion. He also provides a great example of what good sportsmanship is and respects all the athletes who took part in the games. “I think we are pretty good, but everyone is,” shares Forbes.
The first game they played was against the Ontario East team, which ended in a 0-0 draw. From that point onward, Roberts’s North Ontario squad got rolling, and finished the tournament as silver medalists.
