Grundfos, a global leader in water technology, has launched a new intelligent monitoring solution for wastewater systems in the United States, marking a key step in the company’s evolution from a pump manufacturer into a full-spectrum digital water solutions provider.
The platform, called Grundfos Connect Sewer Insights, is a remote monitoring system designed for open-channel wastewater flow, allowing municipalities and utilities to proactively manage collection systems using real-time data, radar sensors, and predictive analytics.
Smart Tech for Aging Infrastructure
Launched July 15, 2025, Grundfos Connect Sewer Insights is engineered to help municipalities address the pressing challenges of aging infrastructure, inflow and infiltration (I&I), and climate-driven overflow events.
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, the financial burden of I&I in the United States exceeds $100 billion annually, due to increased pumping demands, sewage overflows, and elevated treatment costs.
Grundfos’ new system delivers real-time visibility into system behavior, enabling utilities to detect issues like developing blockages or infiltration earlier and respond before full-scale overflows occur.
What Sets Sewer Insights Apart?
Grundfos states that the system is a leap ahead of conventional wastewater monitors in six key areas:
-
Radar sensors, not ultrasonic, offer higher accuracy — unaffected by temperature, mist, or foam.
-
Reliable multi-carrier cellular connectivity, using redundant, non-voice networks.
-
10-minute installation time, a major improvement over current market standards.
-
Compact and low-maintenance design, with a 5-year battery and small form factor.
-
Full cloud dashboard, including remote site maps, analytics, and API data integration (e.g., rainfall).
-
Low total cost, allowing utilities to deploy more sensors for greater monitoring density.
With over 65,000 units deployed globally, Grundfos offers a proven solution in a sector that urgently needs data-driven tools to handle increasing weather volatility and resource constraints.
Supporting Resilient Infrastructure and Environmental Goals
Robert Montenegro, Area Sales Director for Water Utility at Grundfos, emphasized the broader purpose of the launch:
“The integration of Metasphere’s sensing and software capabilities with our water technology expertise enables us to deliver far more than basic monitoring. We’re helping utilities make faster, smarter decisions — reducing operating costs, preventing overflows, and increasing resiliency.”
He added that the system aligns with Grundfos’ mission to provide innovative digital tools for a cleaner environmental future.
A Shift Toward Digital Water Utilities
Grundfos Connect Sewer Insights reflects the company’s ongoing shift toward intelligent water infrastructure, especially following its acquisition of Metasphere, now fully integrated under the Grundfos Connect brand.
By combining physical pumps with data platforms, Grundfos aims to help utilities “do more with less” in the face of growing climate threats, budget constraints, and regulatory pressure.
