Rabbit Adoptathon Aims to Find Forever Homes
OAKVILLE — The Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton (HSOMH) is calling on animal lovers to consider rabbit adoption as it prepares to host a special Rabbit Adoptathon aimed at finding homes for dozens of rabbits currently in its care.
The event comes as the shelter faces increasing demand for cat housing. While HSOMH is currently caring for 25 rabbits, the shelter’s cat population has climbed to 109 animals, prompting staff to prepare for the return of a second cat room that had temporarily been converted into a rabbit adoption space.
For the past several months, rabbits awaiting adoption have benefited from increased visibility in the dedicated bunny room, allowing potential adopters to meet them more easily. As the shelter prepares for an expected influx of cats, many of those rabbits will soon move behind the scenes, making adoption opportunities more challenging.
To help as many rabbits as possible find permanent homes before that transition occurs, HSOMH will host a Rabbit Adoptathon on June 27 and 28.
Same-Day Rabbit Adoptions Available
During the two-day event, prospective adopters will have the opportunity to meet rabbits available for adoption and complete the adoption process on the same day. Adoption counsellors will be available throughout the weekend to help match families with suitable companions.
The Rabbit Adoptathon will take place at the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton during the following hours:
Saturday, June 27: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday, June 28: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
All standard adoption applications and screening procedures will remain in place to ensure rabbits are placed in appropriate homes.
“Every rabbit deserves the chance to be seen, loved, and welcomed into a home,” said Lisa de Sousa, Customer Care Manager at HSOMH. “By adopting a bunny, families are not only gaining a wonderful companion, they’re also helping us create much-needed space for the cats who are counting on us.”
Meet the Rabbits Waiting for Homes
Among the rabbits available for adoption is Cardinal, who has spent more than 200 days waiting for a family.
Shelter staff describe Cardinal as a gentle and thoughtful rabbit who has grown significantly in confidence during his time in care. He enjoys quiet spaces, fresh greens and room to explore.
Another long-term resident is Thyme, who has been waiting 188 days for adoption. Known for his curious and adventurous personality, Thyme enjoys exploring his surroundings and interacting with people.
Potential adopters can also meet Cocoa and Puff, a bonded pair of rabbits who have been searching for a home for 158 days. Shelter staff say the two rabbits provide companionship and enrichment for one another, making them an ideal choice for families interested in adopting multiple pets.
Growing Demand for Animal Care
The adoption event highlights ongoing challenges faced by animal shelters across Ontario as they work to care for increasing numbers of animals while finding suitable homes.
HSOMH officials say rabbit adoption can be an excellent option for families prepared to meet their unique care requirements. Rabbits can form strong bonds with their owners and provide years of companionship when properly cared for.
