OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Their Majesties The King and Queen will visit Canada later this month, with King Charles III scheduled to deliver the Speech from the Throne on May 27 — a historic first in nearly five decades.
In a statement released Friday, Carney confirmed that the Royal Visit will take place on May 26 and 27, 2025. “We will have the privilege of welcoming His Majesty King Charles III, who will deliver Canada’s Speech from the Throne,” the Prime Minister said. “This will be the first time in nearly 50 years that Canada’s Monarch takes part in the State Opening of Parliament. This historic honour matches the weight of our times.”

The upcoming Throne Speech will outline the federal government’s legislative agenda as Parliament convenes following Carney’s recent election win. The presence of the reigning monarch is expected to bring significant ceremonial and constitutional weight to the event, highlighting the King’s role as Canada’s Head of State.
While this will not be King Charles’ first visit to Canada, it will mark his first official visit as reigning monarch since ascending the throne. The last time a reigning sovereign participated directly in the opening of Canada’s Parliament was during Queen Elizabeth II’s 1977 visit for her Silver Jubilee.
The Royal Visit is expected to include ceremonial engagements in Ottawa, and further details will be released by the federal government in the coming weeks.
