Los Angeles business mission highlights Toronto’s unified studios and production talent

Today, Mayor John Tory wrapped up a successful two-day business mission to Los Angeles, where he met with entertainment and technology companies to expand Toronto’s film, TV and digital economy.

Mayor Tory, along with Deputy Mayor Michael Thompson (Ward 21 Scarborough Centre), Chair of the City’s Economic and Community Development Committee, and Councillor Paula Fletcher (Ward 14 Toronto-Danforth), were accompanied by 30 companies on the mission. The group met with established film and television studios operating in Toronto, as well as production companies looking to expand their operations.

Toronto has one of the largest screen-based industries in North America, employing more than 30,000 people. In 2018, Toronto’s screen production industry achieved its second highest level of investment ever at $1.96 billion. The mission reinforced that Toronto’s studio space capacity will increase over the next two years, while the industry workforce continues to develop and expand to meet the high demand amongst production entities.

The Los Angeles business mission is a collaborative public and private sector initiative supported by Toronto’s community of screen-based service providers (film, television, commercials and animation).
