TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs opened their second-round playoff series with a 5–4 win over the Florida Panthers on Monday night at Scotiabank Arena. William Nylander led the charge with two goals and an assist in the first period, setting the tone for the Leafs’ offense.

Toronto built a 4–1 lead by the second period, with contributions from Morgan Rielly and Chris Tanev. However, the game took a concerning turn when starting goaltender Anthony Stolarz left the game after taking an elbow to the head from Florida’s Sam Bennett. No penalty was assessed on the play. Stolarz had stopped eight of nine shots before his departure.

Backup goaltender Joseph Woll stepped in, making 17 saves and withstanding a late surge from the Panthers, who scored three goals in the third period. Despite the pressure, Toronto held on for the win.

Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Wednesday in Toronto.
