MARKHAM, Ont.  — The City of Markham officially launched Chinese Heritage Month 2026 on Thursday evening with a grand opening ceremony at the Flato Markham Theatre, reaffirming its role as a national leader in cultural recognition and inclusion.

As one of Canada’s most diverse municipalities—and the first city in the country to officially proclaim Chinese Heritage Month—Markham continues to set the standard for celebrating cultural heritage and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

A Night of Cultural Celebration and Community Pride

The opening ceremony featured a dynamic showcase of Chinese cultural expression, including traditional lion and dragon dances, classical and contemporary Chinese dance performances, a qipao fashion show, wushu martial arts demonstrations, and live presentations of Chinese music and Peking opera.

The evening also included special vocal performances by community leaders and local artists, as well as a festive appearance by the God of Fortune, symbolizing prosperity, happiness, and good fortune for the year ahead.

Civic Leaders Highlight Lasting Contributions

Mayor Frank Scarpitti said the annual celebration reflects both Markham’s values and its diverse community.

“As the first municipality in Canada to officially proclaim Chinese Heritage Month, Markham is proud to continue this meaningful tradition and to recognize the remarkable contributions of the Chinese Canadian community to our city and country,” Scarpitti said.

Chinese Heritage Month Committee Chair Joe Li, Markham Regional Councillor, emphasized the broader impact of the month-long celebration.

“This milestone celebration is not only about honouring our heritage, but also about inspiring future generations and strengthening understanding across cultures. Chinese Heritage Month continues to be a powerful platform for education, unity, and cultural exchange,” Li said.
