Mayor John Tory welcomes Governor General Mary Simon to City Hall on official visit to Toronto

Today, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Whit Fraser visited City Hall and Mayor John Tory, as part of their first official visit to Ontario and Toronto.

Their Excellencies were greeted by Mayor Tory at City Hall, along with the City of Toronto Honour Guard, which included members of City staff, Toronto Fire Services, Toronto Paramedic Services and TTC.

Mayor Tory hosted Their Excellencies for a courtesy visit, following which the Governor General and Mr. Fraser signed the official City of Toronto Guest Books.

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon was installed as the 30th Governor General of Canada on July 26, 2021. She was born in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik (Quebec) and is the first Indigenous person to be appointed Governor General in Canada. This is the Governor General’s first official visit since her installation and her official visit to Toronto is part of her larger objective to visit each province and territory to engage with Canadians across the country.

Quote:

“On behalf of all Torontonians, I am delighted to welcome Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Mary Simon, and Mr. Whit Fraser on their first official visit to Toronto. It’s especially meaningful as today is National Indigenous Languages Day. As Canada’s first Governor General who is Indigenous, Her Excellency is breaking barriers and a true inspiration. Her essential and meaningful work is making a positive impact on Toronto residents and people all across the country. During our discussion, I raised the City’s Reconciliation Action Plan and welcomed advice on how we can ensure that it is implemented successfully.”
