MISSISSAUGA — The City of Mississauga is encouraging first-time voters to prepare for the 2026 Municipal Election, launching a public information campaign designed to help residents understand the voting process before Election Day on October 26, 2026.
The initiative includes multilingual resources, accessible voting information and step-by-step guidance to help eligible voters participate confidently in the municipal election.
City officials say the campaign aims to ensure more residents understand how to register, what identification they need and where they can vote.
Voting Shapes Local Services
Municipal elections determine the local leaders responsible for decisions that affect residents’ daily lives, including roads, public transit, parks, libraries, recreation programs, housing and municipal spending.
The City is encouraging residents to check their voter eligibility early and make a plan before Election Day.
Multilingual Resources Available
Recognizing Mississauga’s diverse population, the City has translated election information into several commonly spoken languages to make voting information more accessible.
Resources are available in:
- Arabic
- French
- Polish
- Punjabi
- Traditional Chinese
- Urdu
Officials say providing information in multiple languages will help more residents understand the election process and participate in local democracy.
Three Steps for First-Time Voters
The City recommends three simple steps to help first-time voters prepare.
1. Confirm You Are Eligible to Vote
Residents should verify that they are listed on the voters’ list before Election Day.
Those whose information is up to date will receive a voter notification card by mail in September 2026, providing details about when and where they can vote.
2. Plan Before You Go
The City encourages voters to:
- Bring their voter notification card, if received.
- Confirm their voting location in advance.
- Allow extra travel time on voting day.
- Follow voting and wayfinding signs upon arrival.
During advance voting, eligible residents may vote at any designated polling location within Mississauga.
On Election Day, voters must cast their ballot in the ward where they live or own property.
3. Bring Acceptable Identification
Voters must present one piece of identification showing both their name and residential address.
Examples include:
- Ontario driver’s licence
- Ontario Photo Card
- Bank statements or cheques
- Insurance statements
- Other documents listed by the Province of Ontario as acceptable voter identification
Accessible Voting Options
The City says accessibility remains a priority for the 2026 Municipal Election.
Accessible voting locations, assistive voting technology, specialized equipment and trained election staff will be available to support residents requiring assistance.
Voting by Proxy
Residents who cannot vote in person may appoint another eligible Mississauga voter to cast a ballot on their behalf through the City’s proxy voting process.
To do so, both individuals must complete an Appointment for Voting Proxy form and have it certified by the City before 5 p.m. on Election Day.
Encouraging Civic Participation
City officials say voting is one of the most direct ways residents can influence decisions affecting their neighbourhoods and community services.
The City encourages eligible voters to review election information, confirm their registration and make a voting plan well in advance of the October 26 municipal election.
