Mississauga 2026 municipal election set for October 26 with key dates and voter information
Mississauga is gearing up for its next municipal election, set for Monday, October 26, 2026, as residents prepare to elect the city’s next Mayor, City and Regional Councillors, and School Board Trustees.
City officials are encouraging residents to stay informed, update their voter information and consider participating in the democratic process as candidates or voters.
Why the Municipal Election Matters
Municipal elections play a direct role in shaping everyday life in Mississauga. Decisions made at City Hall influence essential services such as transit, road maintenance, parks, emergency services and community programming.
By voting, residents help determine the leadership responsible for guiding these priorities over the next four-year term.
Candidate Opportunities and Information Sessions
Residents interested in running for office can begin preparing ahead of the nomination period.
To qualify as a candidate, individuals must:
- Be a Canadian citizen
- Be at least 18 years old
- Reside in Mississauga, or own or rent property in the city (or have a spouse who does)
An in-person candidate information session is being hosted jointly by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the City of Mississauga:
- Date: March 24, 2026
- Time: 6 to 9 p.m.
- Location: Mississauga City Hall, Council Chambers
Additional workshops are also being offered by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario throughout the spring.

Key Election Dates to Know
Residents and prospective candidates should be aware of the following important dates:
- May 1, 2026: Candidate nominations open
- August 21, 2026: Candidate nominations close
- October 2026: Advance voting period
- October 26, 2026: Election day
Voter Eligibility and Registration
Under Ontario’s Municipal Elections Act, 1996, individuals can vote in Mississauga’s municipal election if they:
- Are a Canadian citizen
- Are at least 18 years old
- Live in Mississauga, or own or rent property in the city (or have a spouse who does)
- Are not otherwise prohibited from voting under applicable legislation
Residents are encouraged to check and update their information through Elections Ontario’s Voter Registration service to ensure they are included on the voters’ list.
Looking Ahead to October
Mississauga’s last municipal election took place in October 2022, with a mayoral and Ward 5 by-election held in June 2024. Municipal elections in Ontario are held every four years.
