Mississauga is expanding its Affordable Transit Program (ATP), introducing new fare options aimed at making public transit more accessible for low-income residents across the city.

Beginning April 1, eligible riders will receive a 50 per cent discount on PRESTO single fares, in addition to the existing discount on MiWay monthly passes.

Expanding Access to Affordable Transit

The Affordable Transit Program, launched as a pilot in 2014 through a partnership between the City of Mississauga and Peel Region, currently provides a 50 per cent discount on MiWay adult monthly passes for eligible residents.

With the latest expansion, both youth and adult riders will now benefit from discounted single fares using PRESTO, offering greater flexibility for those who may not rely on monthly passes.

City officials say the move is intended to improve transit equity while supporting residents who use MiWay for work, school and everyday travel.

More Flexible Payment Options

The addition of discounted single fares gives riders more choice in how they pay for transit, particularly those with irregular travel patterns.

To access the program, riders must have a PRESTO card, which can be added digitally through Apple Wallet or Google Wallet at no cost, or purchased as a physical card for $4 at customer service outlets.

Application Process and Support

Residents can apply for the program through Peel Region, with applications typically processed within 10 to 20 business days. Individuals and households may apply together or separately.

Once approved, participants must visit a designated service location to activate the ATP discount on their PRESTO card. Locations include:

  • MiWay Fares Booth at City Centre Transit Terminal
  • Open Window Hub at Hazel McCallion Central Library

The Open Window Hub also offers in-person assistance with applications and PRESTO setup, operating Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Integration with Regional Transit

The program works alongside Ontario’s One Fare Program, which allows free transfers between MiWay and other transit systems, including Brampton Transit, GO Transit and the TTC.

Officials say this integration helps reduce the overall cost of commuting across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

Supporting Mobility Across Mississauga

The expansion of the Affordable Transit Program reflects ongoing efforts to improve affordability and accessibility within Mississauga’s transit network.

With rising living costs, city leaders are positioning transit affordability as a key component of economic participation, ensuring more residents can move throughout the city with greater ease and financial support.

For trip planning, schedules and service updates, riders can visit MiWay’s official website.
