Mississauga — Mississauga City Council has unanimously approved a $390 million municipal contribution toward the construction of the new Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, setting the stage for the largest hospital redevelopment in Canadian history.

The decision marks the conclusion of months of negotiation between Mayor Carolyn Parrish, senior City staff, and provincial officials. Originally asked to contribute $450 million, the City secured a reduced commitment—$60 million less than the initial request. The contribution will be paid in full by January 1, 2033, with final payment terms to be established during the 2026 budget process.

To fund the commitment, Mississauga will introduce an annual hospital levy of up to 1%, alongside the issuance of a debenture to cover any outstanding shortfalls.

A Historic Health Care Milestone for Mississauga

“This is a truly collaborative effort,” said Mayor Carolyn Parrish. “It will greatly benefit our community, which deserves timely, high-quality healthcare close to home. Mississauga Council unanimously endorses this agreement for the development of a state-of-the-art healthcare facility.”

The funding supports Trillium Health Partners’ transformation of health services for Mississauga, Peel Region, and West Toronto. Once completed, the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will span 2.8 million square feet, include 950 beds and 23 operating rooms, and employ 2,400 additional healthcare workers and 400 more doctors. The redevelopment is expected to generate 3,000 construction jobs and inject $1 billion into the local economy over the next decade.

The Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will be Ontario’s first standalone hospital dedicated entirely to specialized women’s and children’s care. The facility will feature 200,000 square feet of space, one of the province’s largest Neonatal Intensive Care Units, and the first dedicated child and youth mental health inpatient beds in Mississauga.

Karli Farrow, President and CEO of Trillium Health Partners, praised the City’s support:

“This commitment represents more than an investment in our city’s services—it is a powerful declaration of our shared vision for a healthier, more connected, and more compassionate Mississauga.”

Local Share, Global Impact

With demand for Trillium Health Partners’ services growing at seven times the provincial average, the project is essential to meet the health needs of one of Canada’s fastest-growing urban regions.

The City says the agreement also aligns with broader efforts to redistribute regional costs, ensuring residents are not unduly burdened while still advancing critical healthcare investments.

Final decisions on the implementation of the funding model will be debated during the City’s 2026 budget deliberations.
