Mississauga’s first garden suite built using the City’s free pre-approved plans is now complete, marking a milestone in local efforts to create more flexible housing options. The compact yet well-designed backyard home features a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, laundry, and living space—all within a self-contained unit on a residential property.

City officials say this project represents a new era of “gentle density,” providing homeowners with the opportunity to add additional living space without major redevelopment. The completed suite demonstrates how pre-approved designs can speed up the permitting process and make building a secondary home in a backyard simpler and more affordable.

A Fast-Tracked Approach to Backyard Homes

The homeowner utilized Mississauga’s free pre-approved one-bedroom garden suite plan, released in 2024, which helped streamline the approval process. These plans are designed to reduce costs, eliminate guesswork, and allow homeowners to personalize finishes such as paint, flooring, bathroom fixtures, kitchen cabinetry, siding, windows, and doors—all without altering the main structural design.

“This type of housing solution is a win-win,” said a City of Mississauga spokesperson in a statement. “It provides extra living space for families or a potential rental income source, while contributing to the city’s efforts to diversify housing options.”

Part of a Broader Housing Strategy

Garden suites are one element of Mississauga’s multi-pronged approach to tackling housing challenges. With housing costs continuing to rise across the Greater Toronto Area, initiatives like this aim to create more choices for residents without significantly altering the character of established neighbourhoods.

While garden suites alone will not solve the housing crisis, city officials believe they can help alleviate some pressure by offering private, fully equipped living spaces for extended family members or tenants.

Residents interested in adding a garden suite to their property can view renderings, design options, and download the free pre-approved plans directly from the City of Mississauga’s website. The City says the plans are particularly beneficial for homeowners who want a quicker, hassle-free path to creating additional housing on their lot.
