MISSISSAUGA – As summer approaches, the City of Mississauga is calling on families to power down their devices and reconnect with nature. Marking June as Recreation and Parks Month, the city is offering a wide range of free and low-cost outdoor programming designed to get residents of all ages moving, exploring, and enjoying the natural beauty of Mississauga’s green spaces.
From splash pads and accessible playgrounds to hands-on garden days and community bike rides, the city’s initiative aims to promote mental and physical well-being through time spent outdoors.
Outdoor Programs for All Ages
A standout in this year’s offerings is the Play in the Park program — a free, supervised outdoor activity series for children aged 6 to 12. Running in local neighbourhood parks, the program features organized games, sports, crafts, and themed days. All sessions are led by staff trained in emergency first aid and the HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development.
Families can also cool off at the city’s spray pads or one of its many outdoor pools, which are preparing to open for the season. For parents seeking inclusive options, Mississauga offers six fully accessible playgrounds, searchable through the city’s online park filtering tool.
Parks and Picnic Spots
Mississauga’s extensive network of parks provides plenty of scenic picnic spots, including Erindale Park, Jack Darling Memorial Park, and Lakefront Promenade. Residents can enjoy casual meals on park benches or reserve picnic areas and sheltered spaces for larger gatherings.
Events and Education
Garden enthusiasts are invited to Garden Day at Riverwood on June 28, where they can tour the gardens, connect with local horticulture experts, and enjoy art activities. For budding anglers, the city is offering learn-to-fish sessions at Lakefront Promenade and Lake Aquitaine parks. These two-hour workshops provide all equipment and safety gear, with multiple registration dates available on Eventbrite throughout June, July, and August.
Pedal Into Bike Month
Coinciding with Recreation and Parks Month is Mississauga’s celebration of Bike Month. The city has planned community rides, safety workshops, and cycling challenges to encourage greener, healthier transportation.
Safety First
Residents are reminded to stay safe in the sun by using refillable water bottles, wearing sun protection, and being mindful of ticks and extreme heat events.
