WATERLOO, ON — Ontario is strengthening health care in the rapidly expanding Waterloo Region with a new $10 million investment to support the planning and development of a state-of-the-art Waterloo Regional Health Network hospital.
The new funding, announced by Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones, brings the province’s total investment to $15 million toward the project. It is part of Ontario’s broader strategy to improve access to care, reduce hospital wait times, and prepare for future population growth.
“Our government is making historic investments to protect Ontario’s health-care system,” said Minister Jones. “By investing to build a brand-new Waterloo Regional Health Network hospital, we are making it faster and easier for more people and their families to access world-class care in their community.”
Expanded Care for a Growing Region
Planned for the University of Waterloo lands west of Bearinger Road and Hagey Boulevard, the new hospital will offer modern infrastructure and expanded services to meet regional demand. Key features will include:
-
Increased patient capacity to reduce wait times and allow faster access to care
-
Expanded emergency and critical care services
-
New cardiac clinics as part of the Regional Cardiac Care Centre
-
Advanced diagnostic imaging and surgical spaces
-
Enhanced maternal, newborn, and pediatric care
-
Modernized inpatient medical and surgical units
A Long-Term Vision for Local Health Care
The new hospital will serve as a major hub for acute care in the region, ensuring that residents of Waterloo and surrounding communities receive high-quality, accessible services close to home. The location near the University of Waterloo is expected to support future partnerships in research, education, and innovation.
This initiative is part of Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, Ontario’s ongoing investment to modernize hospitals and health services across the province.
As the population in Waterloo Region continues to grow, the provincial government is responding with critical infrastructure designed to protect Ontarians’ health and support the future of public health care delivery.
