As summer heats up across the GTA, so does the risk to our pets — especially those left in hot vehicles, on hot pavement, or without shade and fresh water.
Each year, animal protection officers respond to urgent calls about dogs locked in cars, cats suffering from heat exhaustion, and pets experiencing avoidable distress. GTA Weekly is sharing key reminders to keep your furry companions safe this season.
Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car
Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can soar past 40°C within minutes — turning a car into a deadly oven. In Ontario, it is illegal to leave an animal unattended in a vehicle in a way that endangers their health or safety.
If you see a pet in distress inside a car:
-
Call 911 immediately.
-
Do not attempt to break the window unless instructed by police or first responders.
-
Stay near the vehicle until help arrives.
Recognize the Signs of Heatstroke in Pets
Pets don’t sweat like humans do. They rely on panting to cool down, which is less effective in extreme heat.
Warning signs of heatstroke include:
-
Excessive panting or drooling
-
Lethargy or confusion
-
Vomiting or diarrhea
-
Collapse or seizures
If you suspect heatstroke, move the animal to a cool, shaded area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and seek veterinary help.
Hot Pavement = Burnt Paws
If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Asphalt and sidewalks can exceed 50°C on sunny days, causing painful burns in seconds. Walk your dog in the early morning or evening, and always check the ground before heading out.
Keep Pets Hydrated & Sheltered
Ensure outdoor pets have constant access to clean, cool water and shade. Never tether an animal in direct sunlight or in a confined space during a heat alert.
Tips for a Cool & Happy Summer
-
Freeze treats (like broth in ice cube trays) for enrichment
-
Use cooling mats or fans indoors
-
Avoid long walks during peak heat
-
Never rely on a fan alone — they don’t cool pets effectively
As we enjoy the warmth of summer, let’s not forget the responsibility we carry for those who rely on us most.
