London, ON — Construction is officially underway on a new long-term care facility in London, Ontario. The Extendicare-London project will add 192 modern long-term care beds to the region and is part of the Ontario government’s broader strategy to expand and upgrade senior care across the province.

The new home will feature 22 brand-new beds and 170 redeveloped ones, all set within a purpose-built facility designed to provide a more personalized and dignified living environment. Scheduled to open in summer 2027, the home will include six dedicated Resident Home Areas, each accommodating up to 32 residents in a more intimate setting. In addition to private rooms and activity spaces, the facility will feature a chapel, café, family dining areas, a beauty salon, and a spa room—all fully air-conditioned.

“This project reflects our commitment to fixing long-term care in Ontario,” said Dawn Gallagher Murphy, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Long-Term Care. “When construction is complete, 192 residents will have a safe and modern place to call home.”

The development is supported by the province’s Construction Funding Subsidy top-up and falls under the government’s goal to build 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across Ontario. According to the Ministry of Long-Term Care, 147 projects totaling nearly 24,000 beds are already either completed, under construction, or approved for construction.

Extendicare, one of Canada’s largest long-term care providers, will operate the new facility. Dr. Michael Guerriere, President and CEO of Extendicare, noted that this is the company’s ninth redevelopment project to break ground. “We extend our deep appreciation to the Government of Ontario and the City of London for their steadfast support without which this project would not be possible,” he said.

Local representatives also welcomed the project, including MPPs Steve Pinsonneault and Rob Flack, who emphasized the importance of providing seniors with compassionate, high-quality care in their own communities.

The Extendicare-London facility aligns with the goals outlined in the province’s Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, which prioritizes better staffing, quality care, improved infrastructure, and streamlined services for seniors.
