Province Modernizing System to Improve Movement of People and Goods

Ontario is seeking public input on a long-term plan to modernize the transportation system in the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) region, to ensure people and goods are able to move throughout the region with greater ease.

The GGH Transportation Plan is a transformative initiative that will build on short- and medium-term projects, such as GO Regional Express Rail to create the next-generation transportation system in the GGH.

With a growing economy and more people moving to the region, this multi-year plan will look ahead to ensure Ontario’s transportation system is ready to address challenges such as climate change, while leveraging the benefits of new technologies, such as automated vehicles.

The province is seeking public input on a draft set of long-term goals and objectives for the GGH Transportation Plan. The input collected in through this consultation will inform the development of transportation options for the way people and goods move throughout the region. Throughout the project, residents, businesses and other organizations will have opportunities to have their say in developing a transportation system that reflects their needs.

Those interested in sharing their feedback on the draft long-term goals and objectives can fill out an online survey until Dec. 23, 2017.

Planning an integrated and accessible transportation system that’s ready for the future is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

Quick Facts

  • By 2041, the GGH’s population and employment are forecasted to grow from nine million to over 13 million people, and from under five million to over six million jobs, respectively.
  • In 2012, a total of $791 billion in commodity value was transported in the region.
  • In 2013, a total of over 35.9 billion kilometers were travelled by passenger cars on provincial highways in the GGH, and over four billion kilometers were travelled by heavy trucks.
  • Ontario is making the largest infrastructure investment in hospitals, schools, public transit, roads and bridges in the province’s history. To learn more about what’s happening in your community, go to Ontario.ca/BuildON.

“The future of transportation in our province is very exciting. We are the first jurisdiction in Canada to allow the testing of automated vehicles, supporting innovation. We are growing our network of EV charging stations to help reduce our carbon footprint. We are also investing in high speed rail and regional express rail to better connect our communities. I encourage everyone to help us shape a vision for the future of transportation in the Greater Golden Horseshoe with this survey.”
