F1 Racing Overview: Formula 1 Weekend in Spain, Round 6

Welcome all fans new and old to Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio De Espana 2002. Also known as Formula 1 weekend in Barcelona Spain. This is round 6 of the 2022 championship season Drivers and Constructors. 

Charles Leclerc is in the lead over Max Verstappen with 104 pts – 85 pts in the Championship race. Ferrari leads the Constructors Championship with 157 pts over Red Bull Racings’ 151 pts.

Here’s some facts about the race track.

  • It’s called The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
  • The Circuit length is 4.675 km.
  • The number of laps in the upcoming race on Sunday is 66.
  • The first Grand Prix racing took place here in Spain in 1991.
  • The race distance for Sunday is 308.424 km
  • The lap record is 1.18.149, held by Max Verstappen (2021).

This weekend like all race weekends is divided into 3 days of racing.  Practices 1 & 2 on Friday. Then Practice 3 and Qualifying races on Saturday with race day on Sunday.

Here’s a quick brief on Practice 1 and Practice 2.

Brief on Practice 1

Charles LeClerc tops F1 over his partner Carlos Sainz both racing for Scuderia Ferrari and Max Verstappen for Red Bull Racing. A brief note, this is the first week that Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton looked at ease and comfortable in their cars.

The conditions were very hot on the track. Look out for tire strategies during the race this weekend.

Brief on Practice 2

Again, Charles LeClerc topped the second session ahead of his teammate followed by a strong showing by Mercedes in 2nd and 3rd.  Note, Ex Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas continues to have engine malfunction with his Alfa Romeo as he stopped on the track. A yellow flag came on to slow down practice 2.
