Perspective: Trump ordered to pay $2m for charity foundation misuse

Trump Fined 2 Million For Campaign Fraud

The candidate Donald J. Trump now the 45th President of the United States has been found guilty of campaign fraud. Funds collected from donors was diverted to his campaign or other purposes for which approval was not authorized under the regulations governing the use of such funds.

Above the law

President Trump has been behaving as if he is above the law. He has stated inter alia that as a sitting president he can do as he wishes. This court ruling and subsequent settlement negotiated by his lawyers and the Justice Department rubishes that claim. Trump now faces an impeachment enquiry for his conduct which has been deemed as an abuse of power when he allegedly in a telephone conference asked the Ukrainian leader Zelensky to use his office to investigate his political rival from the Democratic Party Joe Biden and his son. There is the mistaken view that a sitting President cannot be prosecuted in a court of law while in office. This prosecution has to be done after he leaves office. This ruling on the campaign funds misuse seems to have changed all that thinking.

Perspective

This admission of guilt by Trump has undermined the high office of the presidency. We are not impressed that this incident has occured. This is the highest office in America and should stand out as a lighthouse of integrity and transparency.

We note it happened before he was president but seem to have continued with no attempt to stem same after he came to office. What he did when is crucial, as we are all aware. Things happen, but what corrective action was taken is important. It does show intent and pattern of conduct.

This is shameful and has tarnished this supposedly great institution. What a tragedy!

This is our perspective. What is yours?
