Ottawa, ON – Prime Minister Mark Carney marked Canada Day 2025 with a message that acknowledged the country’s past, embraced its multicultural and Indigenous heritage, and outlined a bold national vision for a more unified and resilient future.
Speaking on the 158th anniversary of Confederation, Carney called Canada “the greatest nation on earth” and emphasized the enduring strength of a country built on partnership and shared purpose.
“One hundred and fifty-eight years ago, a few provinces bet on the idea that they’d be stronger together than they ever could be apart. They were right,” said the Prime Minister.

Acknowledging the Past, Building the Future
Carney emphasized that Canada’s story did not begin in 1867, noting the long history of Indigenous Peoples on the land. He pledged that the future of the country will be written in true partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.
The Prime Minister also reflected on defining moments in Canadian history — from Vimy Ridge to 9/11 — as examples of when Canadians “had to step up.”
Now, he said, Canada faces another inflection point.
“Old friendships are fraying, our economy is being buffeted by a trade crisis, and our values are being tested by attacks on democracy and freedoms,” he said.
A Vision of Canadian Strength and Sovereignty
Carney laid out a forward-looking agenda centered around economic renewal, national cohesion, and global leadership. He spoke of building “one Canadian economy” through domestic infrastructure, Canadian energy, and homegrown technology. He also reaffirmed plans to reinvest in Canada’s Armed Forces.
“Canadian leadership is defined not only by the strength of our values, but also by the value of our strength,” Carney declared.
The Prime Minister promised to “break down barriers” so Canadians can buy and work anywhere in the country, signaling new initiatives to enhance interprovincial trade and labour mobility.
The message concluded with a rallying call:
“Our destiny is to make [Canada] greater still – not by what we say, but by what we do.”
