TORONTO — Today, Premier Doug Ford issued the following statement to mark the beginning of Hanukkah:
“Tonight, at sundown, Jewish communities in Ontario and around the world will come together with family and friends to light the menorah and mark the beginning of Hanukkah.
This cherished Festival of Lights commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the lamp that burned for eight days with only a day’s supply of oil. Hanukkah is a time to reflect on historical miracles, honour the resilience of the Jewish people and enjoy the warmth and light that the menorah symbolizes.
It’s also an opportunity to honour the contributions of Jewish communities across Ontario, whose culture and history continue to inspire us all. In the midst of this year’s celebration, we also continue to mourn the antisemitic terrorist attack against Israel and the Jewish people that took place on October 7, 2023.
Months later, our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and loved ones of those killed on that tragic day, and we remain steadfast in our call for the safe and immediate return of all hostages being held captive by Hamas.
In these challenging times, Hanukkah reminds us to seek light in the darkness and find strength in perseverance. Let us all stand united against antisemitism, hate and discrimination to create a brighter future for all.
On behalf of the province of Ontario, I wish everyone observing Hanukkah a blessed and happy celebration.
Chag Hanukkah Sameach!”
