Prime Minister Canada Day Message Calls for Unity and Nation-Building
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney used his first Canada Day message as prime minister to celebrate the country’s diversity while calling on Canadians to embrace unity, nation-building and a renewed commitment to building a stronger future together.
In a statement released July 1, Carney reflected on Canada’s history, highlighting the country’s achievements since Confederation and encouraging Canadians to meet today’s challenges with the same determination that shaped the nation over the past century and a half.
Celebrating Canada’s Diversity
The Prime Minister described Canada as a nation defined by its people and geography, stretching across three oceans, six time zones and nearly 10 million square kilometres.
He said Canada’s diversity has always been one of its defining strengths and emphasized that unity does not require uniformity.
“Our differences are strengths to nurture rather than risks to manage,” Carney said, adding that Canada’s shared values remain the country’s strongest foundation.
Reflecting on Canada’s History
Carney connected this year’s Canada Day message to several milestones in Canadian history, including Confederation in 1867, the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885 and the opening of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1962.
He said those nation-building projects reflected Canadians’ willingness to work together to create opportunities for future generations.
According to the Prime Minister, Canada’s history demonstrates that progress comes through collective effort rather than individual achievement.

A Call to Build Again
The Prime Minister also encouraged Canadians to support domestic industries and explore the country, describing these as practical ways to strengthen Canada’s economy and communities.
He pointed to choosing Canadian products, travelling within Canada and supporting Canadian workers as examples of everyday actions that contribute to national resilience.
Carney said Canada is once again at a pivotal moment and called for renewed ambition to build major projects using Canadian workers, Canadian materials and Canadian values.
Message of Unity
Acknowledging that divisions continue to exist, Carney said Canada’s enduring strength lies in its ability to bring together people with different backgrounds and perspectives.
He argued that kindness, solidarity and mutual respect remain essential to Canada’s continued success.
The Prime Minister concluded his Canada Day message by encouraging Canadians to continue strengthening the country through acts of cooperation and shared purpose.

Carney’s Canada Day statement reinforces themes that have featured prominently throughout his government’s early agenda, including economic resilience, domestic investment, national infrastructure and stronger internal unity.
