Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Mark Carney joined members of Ottawa’s Muslim community to mark Eid al-Adha, a sacred day of celebration and reflection for Muslims across Canada and around the world. In his statement, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of the holiday, while also acknowledging the solemn anniversary of the 2021 terrorist attack on the Afzaal family in London, Ontario.
“Eid is a celebration of service and a time of faith, family, and charity,” Carney stated. “It reminds us that we are bound by a common humanity and a sacred obligation to take care of ourselves and of each other.”

Carney shared a photo from Friday’s Eid gathering in Ottawa, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to mark the holiday alongside community members. The Prime Minister emphasized that the values of compassion and service embodied by Eid strengthen Canada as a whole.
This year’s Eid al-Adha falls on the fourth anniversary of the deadly Islamophobic attack that claimed the lives of four members of the Afzaal family. Prime Minister Carney honoured the memory of Salman, Madiha, Yumna, and Talat, calling the attack a “terrorist act” and reaffirming his government’s commitment to confronting hate and protecting religious freedom in Canada.
“To all Canadians celebrating, Eid Mubarak,” said Carney. “I hope you gather with your loved ones on this blessed day.”
The Prime Minister’s office also reiterated support for initiatives combating hate crimes, promoting inclusion, and safeguarding communities of faith from violence and discrimination.
