Our Canadian Olympians saw some success and some disappointment on a busy Saturday in Beijing. We managed to add one more medal to our tally, and Canada still remains in the top 5 in the medal race!
Here is a RECAP of Saturday at the Olympics for Canada!
***Éliot Grondin of Quebec and Meryeta O’Dine of B.C., set out to reach the podium in the Snowboard Cross Team Big Final. Despite the fact that during the women’s portion of the race Meryeta collided mid air with the Italian boarder Caterina Carpano, O’Dine finished the race and together both her and Grondin earned a BRONZE for Canada – the only medal of the day!

Reigning world champion Laurent Dubreuil of Levis, Que., finishes 0.03 seconds off the podium in the Men’s 500 m Speed Skating Event. After being called for a false start, Dubreuil finished OFF the podium for the first time this season. Disappointingly he had to settle for FOURTH place.

***The Ice Dance Figure Skating Team of Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, the reigning world bronze medalists and Canada’s best hope for a medal in any Figure Skating event at these Olympics faltered slightly on their way to a score of 83.52 in the rhythm dance. This landed them in 6th place overall so far. All three Canadian Ice Dance pairs qualified to skate the Free Dance which will take place on Sunday. Let’s hope Gilles and Poirier knock it out of the park!

In Curling, both the Canadian Men and the Canadian Women suffered their second consecutive LOSSES respectively. The men lost to Sweden with a score of 7-4 , while the women lost to the Sweden women with a score of 7-6. Let’s hope both teams WIN their next matches.
