Rick Maltese Just Like an Angel brings together acclaimed Canadian musicians for an inspiring new release rooted in empathy and hope.

TORONTO β€” Toronto pianist, composer, and songwriter Rick Maltese is encouraging listeners to embrace kindness with the release of his new single, Just Like an Angel, a heartfelt track from his latest album, Rick Maltese & Friends Vol. 2.

Released on the strength of an accomplished ensemble of Canadian musicians, the song combines warm melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and jazz-influenced musicianship to deliver a simple but timely message: small gestures of compassion can have a profound impact.

A Song Inspired by Everyday Acts of Kindness

At its core, Just Like an Angel celebrates the value of everyday generosity.

Through lyrics that emphasize the importance of a smile, a kind word, or an open door, Maltese reminds listeners that meaningful change often begins with simple human interactions.

He has described the song as a reminder that kindness costs very little while creating a ripple effect that can positively influence countless lives. Rather than focusing on grand gestures, the song highlights the quiet moments of care that often go unnoticed but leave lasting impressions.

A Collaborative Recording Featuring Canadian Music Veterans

The recording brings together an impressive group of respected musicians.

Joining Maltese are acclaimed bassist George Koller, whose recording career spans more than 1,600 albums and collaborations with artists including Peter Gabriel, Loreena McKennitt, Holly Cole, and many others.

Drummer Ben Wittman, known for his work with Sting, Paul Simon, Rosanne Cash, and Grammy-nominated pianist Laila Biali, provides the rhythmic foundation, while internationally recognized flutist Bill McBirnie adds expressive melodic performances throughout the recording.

The sessions were recorded at Toronto’s Kuhl Muzik, where the musicians’ longstanding professional relationships helped create an atmosphere of spontaneity and collaboration.

A Career Rooted in Musical Excellence

Maltese has built a diverse career spanning classical music, jazz, blues, folk, pop, and world music.

An accomplished pianist, arranger, conductor, and musical director, he has directed choirs and musical theatre productions while previously serving as Musical Director at Toronto’s historic Royal York Hotel.

His writing continues to reflect an appreciation for strong melodic composition, influenced by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, while remaining accessible to contemporary audiences.

Maltese is also developing a future classical composition currently carrying the working title Cantata for Peace, further demonstrating the breadth of his musical interests.

Music That Encourages Reflection

While Just Like an Angel showcases polished musicianship and elegant arrangements, its greatest strength lies in its message.

The single offers an optimistic reminder that compassion remains one of the most powerful ways individuals can positively influence their communities. By pairing memorable melodies with universal themes of empathy and generosity, Maltese has created a song that speaks to listeners across generations.

As audiences discover Just Like an Angel, the Toronto musician continues to demonstrate that music can do more than entertainβ€”it can inspire kindness, foster connection, and remind people of the value found in everyday acts of humanity.
