The free, family-friendly event will feature the unveiling of 16 large-scale paintings that chronicle the history of steamships in Muskoka and the region’s evolution as a tourism destination. The exhibition highlights key moments dating back to the launch of the first steamship, Wenonah, in 1866, through to the enduring legacy of the Segwun.
A Visual Journey Through Muskoka’s Steamship History
The newly commissioned artwork will be displayed along the exterior of the Heritage Boatworks building at Muskoka Wharf, adjacent to the ship’s ticket office. Each painting represents a milestone in Muskoka’s development, offering visitors a chronological, open-air storytelling experience.
According to organizers, the project was made possible through funding from the Heritage Canada Legacy Program, received in recognition of Segwun’s 100th anniversary in 2025. The funding supported the commissioning of local artists to create original works that reflect Muskoka’s maritime heritage.
“We were lucky to receive a grant through the Heritage Canada Legacy Program in celebration of Segwun’s 100th anniversary last year… This funding has allowed us to commission a group of talented, local artists to create these 16 original paintings,” said Cathy Tait, Marketing Associate with Muskoka Steamships.
“We can’t wait to see the paintings displayed this Spring and to watch visitors discover our rich history as they stroll through this creative exhibition!”

The anniversary milestone and accompanying exhibition underscore the importance of preserving regional history while showcasing it in new, creative formats for modern audiences.
