The Shaw Festival 2026 season adds Heartbreak House, One for the Pot and The Wind in the Willows while expanding transportation options for GTA audiences.
NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ON — The Shaw Festival is expanding its 2026 season with three major productions opening in July and enhanced transportation options designed to make it easier for audiences from the Greater Toronto Area to experience live theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The additions include Heartbreak House by Bernard Shaw, One for the Pot by Ray Cooney and Tony Hilton, and a new family-friendly production of The Wind in the Willows, while the popular Shaw Express transportation program expands service from Toronto and Burlington throughout the summer.
The announcements build on an already ambitious 64th season that runs through December 23, 2026.
Shaw Express Expands Access for GTA Audiences
One of the most significant developments for GTA theatre-goers is the expansion of the Shaw Express transportation service.
Sponsored by The William and Nona Heaslip Foundation, the service provides round-trip bus transportation from downtown Toronto and Burlington to Niagara-on-the-Lake on most performance days through September.
New for 2026, select dates will feature two-show itineraries, allowing patrons to attend both a matinee and evening performance before returning home.
The expanded transportation initiative is part of the festival’s broader effort to improve accessibility and encourage more visitors from across Ontario to experience Shaw Festival productions.
Bernard Shaw Classic Opens July 10
Opening July 10 at the Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre, Heartbreak House explores themes of love, society and uncertainty in the years leading up to war.
Directed by Shaw Festival Artistic Director Tim Carroll, the production follows Ellie Dunn, played by Allison Edwards-Crewe, as she arrives at the home of her friend Hesione and becomes entangled in a web of emotional and social complications.
The production stars Julia Course as Hesione and Tom Rooney as the eccentric Captain Shotover, whose observations about society frame much of the play’s commentary.
Heartbreak House runs through October 3.
Farcical Comedy Arrives at Festival Theatre
The following evening, July 11, One for the Pot officially opens at the Festival Theatre.
Directed by Chris Abraham, the classic British farce centres on wealthy businessman Jonathan Hardcastle, portrayed by Patrick Galligan, whose plans are thrown into disarray when multiple heirs arrive to claim a substantial inheritance.
The production features Peter Fernandes as Billy Hickory Wood and Martin Happer as Charlie Barnet in a fast-paced comedy filled with mistaken identities, unexpected arrivals and escalating confusion.
The production runs through October 11.
Family Favourite Takes the Stage
The third July opening is The Wind in the Willows, which officially opens July 12 at the Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre.
Adapted and directed by Fiona Sauder and based on A.A. Milne’s Toad of Toad Hall, the production follows the adventures of the impulsive Toad and his loyal friends Rat, Mole and Badger.
Lawrence Libor stars as Toad, with Sharry Flett, Gabriella Sundar Singh and Shawn Wright rounding out the principal cast.
Designed for audiences of all ages, the production includes a pre-show interactive workshop that allows children and families to engage with characters and themes from the story before the performance begins.
The Wind in the Willows runs through September 27.
Beyond the Stage Programming Continues to Grow
Alongside its theatrical productions, the Shaw Festival continues to expand its popular Beyond the Stage programming.
More than 5,000 events, workshops and educational activities are scheduled throughout the season, including backstage tours, artist conversations, arts education programming, Coffee Concerts, Speakeasies, Gospel Choir sessions, Perfect Pairings concerts and family-focused activities.
Festival officials say the programming is designed to deepen audience engagement and provide visitors with opportunities to connect with artists and the creative process beyond the stage itself.
A Busy Summer Ahead
The July openings add to a season that already includes productions of Funny Girl, Amadeus, Sleuth, Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, Ohio State Murders and A New Work in Progress.
The season will conclude with the Shaw Festival’s annual holiday programming, including productions of A Year with Frog and Toad and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.
As one of North America’s largest charitable theatre organizations, the Shaw Festival remains a major cultural attraction for Ontario residents and visitors alike, drawing audiences from across Canada and internationally to Niagara-on-the-Lake each year.
