BRAMPTON – The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that head coach Sheldon Cassimy has resigned after two seasons at the helm and six total years with the organization.
Six-Year Tenure with the Honey Badgers
Cassimy joined the Honey Badgers’ coaching staff in 2020 and quickly became an integral figure in the club’s development. During his tenure, Brampton made the postseason four consecutive years (2020–2023), highlighted by the franchise’s 2022 CEBL Championship, where Cassimy served as lead assistant coach during the team’s 90–88 win over the Scarborough Shooting Stars.
General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Jermaine Anderson praised Cassimy’s contributions:
“We would like to express our deepest gratitude for everything Sheldon has contributed since joining the team in 2020. Sheldon has had a meaningful impact on the development of every player to wear a Honey Badger uniform during his time. His ability to connect with players and adapt to the evolving demands of both the league and our organization has been truly special. I look forward to following his continued growth in the coaching profession and wish him nothing but success in the future.”
Coaching Highlights
Cassimy’s professional head coaching debut came in 2022 when he stepped in for then-head coach Ryan Schmidt against the Guelph Nighthawks (now Calgary Surge). He led the Honey Badgers to a convincing 95–76 victory, his first career win.
He went on to guide the team during international play at the Basketball Champions League Americas (BCLA) in 2023, later serving again as lead assistant during that CEBL regular season under Antoine Broxsie. In 2024, he was promoted to head coach and spent two seasons in the role.
Reflecting on his time with the team, Cassimy said:
“I want to thank the Honey Badgers and CEBL for providing an opportunity for Canadian coaches and players to develop. I joined the team in 2020 and these six years have been invaluable. The Honey Badgers will always hold a special place in my heart. I want to thank Jermaine [Anderson] for bringing me on and being nothing but supportive through this journey. I hope the very best for the team going forward.”
Next Chapter
Cassimy will now focus on his role as lead assistant coach with the McMaster University Marauders men’s basketball program, which tips off its season on October 24 at Burridge Gymnasium in Hamilton.
With the 2025 season complete, Honey Badgers fans can look forward to offseason updates and the release of 2026 season ticket packages in the coming months.
