City Of Toronto Says to Throw Away Old Skates, Charity Says “Donate Them!”

TORONTOFeb. 16, 2017 /CNW/ – Skate To Great, a national charity which collects and distributes new and used skates is outraged by an advertisement posted in TTC subway stations around Toronto. The advertisement from the City Of Toronto reads, “Where do my skates go? Search. Know before you throw. Find out what waste items go where toronto.ca/wastewizard,” and pictures what seems to be a perfectly good pair of skates. Skate To Great has other plans for your old skates, donating them to kids in Toronto who otherwise wouldn’t be able to go skating. Skate To Great has assisted thousands of Toronto’s children since inception in 2012, get the opportunity to go skating via community programs, not-for-profit organizations and Toronto area schools.

“Skating should be a right and not a privilege in Canada, and we can’t believe the City Of Torontowould take out advertising with misinformation that a perfectly good pair pictured, should be thrown away. We’ve got many donation locations open year-round and recycling your old skates should always come first.”

Co-founded by Olympic Ice Dance Figure Skater, Kaitlyn Weaver and Toronto Philanthropist and the Governor General’s Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers and Caring Canadian Award Recipient, Evan Kosiner, the charity aimed to make skating available to deserving children and at-risk youth regardless of their physical or financial circumstances. Over 30,000 pairs of skates have been collected and distributed nationally over the past four years.

“Right now there is a shortage of skates in the General Toronto Area. We ask individuals to find their old pair and tell a friend, recycling and putting their old skates to good use,” says Kosiner. A list of donation locations are available via skatetogreat.org/donatenow.
