MISSISSAUGA — In a region rapidly emerging as Canada’s life sciences capital, the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) is stepping up in a major way to support early-stage innovation. Through SpinUp, its first dedicated wet lab startup incubator, UTM is providing much-needed space, resources, and mentorship to help scientific discoveries evolve into real-world health solutions.

SpinUp, located at UTM and officially launched last spring, recently marked its one-year anniversary, celebrating a growing pipeline of biotech, health science, and green tech companies tackling everything from ALS research to neurodegenerative therapies.

“Canada leads in academic science, but translating that into commercial breakthroughs takes support,” said organizers. “SpinUp is helping close that gap.”

🧪 Lab Space Meets Startup Ambition

The biggest challenge for many scientific entrepreneurs? Finding affordable, fully equipped lab space to get their research off the ground.

SpinUp solves this by offering:

  • Access to state-of-the-art wet labs

  • Robust entrepreneurship programming

  • Direct pathways to U of T’s research talent and global network

Startups also benefit from partnerships with leading biotech firms and access to investment-readiness resources that typically remain out of reach for early-stage ventures.

🧠 Spotlight on Neuropeutics Inc.

Among SpinUp’s standout resident ventures is Neuropeutics Inc., a startup focused on breakthrough treatments for ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The company, co-founded by Dr. Marc Shenouda, a postdoctoral fellow at U of T’s Tanz Centre, and Dr. Janice Robertson, the James Hunter Family Chair in ALS Research, was recently awarded the inaugural AbbVie Biotech Innovators Award.

🏆 Merck Renews Blue Ticket Competition

The anniversary celebration also saw the relaunch of the Blue Ticket Competition in partnership with Merck Canada. The initiative provides:

  • One-year free SpinUp membership

  • Access to labs and mentorship

  • A launchpad to commercial readiness

It’s one more way UTM is supporting researchers on the path from bench to business.

Whether supporting neuroscience, biotech, or climate-driven health solutions, SpinUp is a bold example of how a university-led initiative can reshape the future of Canadian innovation—and it’s happening right here in Mississauga.
