Steelheads Add Defenceman Mason Roy in Trade with Owen Sound

The Brampton Steelheads have added a young defensive prospect to their roster, completing a trade with the Owen Sound Attack to acquire Mason Roy.

In the deal announced Tuesday, Brampton sends a fifth-round selection in the 2026 OHL Priority Draft (Sudbury Wolves pick) and a tenth-round selection in 2027 to Owen Sound in exchange for Roy, a second-round pick from the 2024 OHL Priority Draft.

Former second-round pick joins Brampton blue line

Roy, a native of Campbellville, Ontario, was selected 42nd overall by the Attack in the second round of the 2024 OHL Priority Draft. The 6-foot-2, 178-pound left-shot defenceman developed through the Halton Hurricanes minor hockey program, where he emerged as a reliable puck-moving presence on the back end.

During his U16 season with the Hurricanes, Roy recorded two goals and 26 assists in 34 games, showcasing his ability to contribute offensively while playing a steady defensive role. This season, he has appeared in 17 games with Owen Sound, gaining early OHL experience before the move to Brampton.

Steelheads continue to build for the future

The acquisition reflects Brampton’s continued emphasis on developing young talent as the franchise builds its roster through a mix of draft capital, player development, and targeted trades. By bringing in a former second-round selection, the Steelheads add size and depth to their defensive group while investing in a player with room to grow at the OHL level.

Roy is expected to continue his development within Brampton’s system as the club progresses through the current season.

The Steelheads play their home games at the CAA Centre, where they are competing in their second season in Brampton following the franchise’s relocation from Mississauga.
