TORONTO — Canadians are mourning the passing of Stephen Lewis, a towering figure in Canadian public life and an internationally respected advocate for human rights, following a statement released by Prime Minister Mark Carney on March 31.

In his statement, the Prime Minister described Lewis as “a pillar of compassionate leadership in Canadian democracy” and highlighted his lifelong commitment to justice, equality, and global cooperation.

A Career Defined by Public Service

Stephen Lewis served in multiple high-profile roles throughout his career, including as a member of Ontario’s legislature and Leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party. He later represented Canada on the global stage as Ambassador to the United Nations, where he became known for his advocacy on humanitarian issues.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Lewis played a key role in positioning Canada as a leader in the international effort to end apartheid in South Africa, reflecting his long-standing commitment to human rights and multilateralism.

Global Leadership on HIV/AIDS

Lewis’s impact extended far beyond Canada. As the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, he brought global attention to the human toll of the epidemic and pushed for stronger international action.

He later co-founded the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which focused on supporting grassroots organizations working to address HIV/AIDS in Africa and improve community health outcomes.

His work emphasized the link between access to health care and broader economic and social development, a perspective that shaped global conversations on poverty and inequality.

Tributes and Legacy

Prime Minister Carney extended condolences to Lewis’s family, including his wife Michele and their three children, as well as to the many individuals and communities impacted by his work.

Lewis’s legacy is defined by decades of advocacy for vulnerable populations and his belief that global challenges require collective solutions.

His contributions to Canadian public life and international development continue to resonate, particularly in areas of public health, human rights, and global equity.
