Strengthening Highway Safety in Mississauga

MISSISSAUGA – The Ontario government is opening a new, leading-edge Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment in Mississauga. The $20 million facility will ensure local OPP have the tools and space they need to patrol provincial highways, which include sections of Highway 401 – Canada’s most travelled transportation corridor.

“Enforcing and promoting road safety is an important responsibility of many frontline officers and today’s announcement will support them in this effort,” said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones “This new state-of-the-art detachment in Mississauga provides the OPP Highway Safety Division officers with the resources to combat the dangerous increase in speeding and racing on our roads and enforce safety on some of Canada’s busiest highways.”

With approximately 17,000 square feet, the Mississauga OPP detachment will provide space and modern infrastructure that supports the latest technology, secure evidence vaults, three holding cells as well as closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and other advanced security features. The detachment also includes a Collision Reporting Centre.

The Mississauga OPP Detachment is part of the OPP Modernization – Phase 2 project, a $182-million initiative announced in 2018 to replace nine aging OPP facilities across the province that are at the end of their lifespan and no longer meet the requirements of today’s police operations.

“The new OPP Mississauga Detachment demonstrates a shared commitment with our government to safe communities and a secure Ontario. This carefully planned and modern detachment provides our officers and civilian members with the facilities required to maintain our commitment to public safety and enhance the services we deliver to the communities we serve,” said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.

“Mississauga residents and our local OPP officers can now count on a new, modern facility equipped to provide the most up-to-date services and supports,” said Nina Tangri, Member of Provincial Parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville. “The new detachment demonstrates our government’s commitment to the front-line police and road safety in our community.”

“Infrastructure modernization projects like this one are essential to making life better for Ontario residents and supporting economic recovery,” said Stephen Crawford, Member of Provincial Parliament for Oakville and Parliamentary Assistant to the Ontario Minister of Infrastructure. “Today’s announcement affirms the government’s commitment to the more than $60 billion dollars worth of investments highlighted in our P3 project pipeline released in June.”

• The new facility is accessible and designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver Standard, which recognizes buildings with reduced environmental impacts.
• In 2018, the OPP patrolled over 128,000 kilometres of roadways including Highway 401, Canada’s busiest transportation route.
• This project has been delivered by Infrastructure Ontario through its public-private partnership (P3) model.
• All nine new detachments are being built by a team led by Bird Capital OMP Project Co Inc.
• Construction for this project began in spring 2019.
