🏅 Athlete of the Week – Summer McIntosh

Canada’s Swimming Phenom Tops World Aquatics and Nearly Writes History

A Historic Week in Singapore

At just 18, Summer McIntosh once again dominated the world stage, capturing four gold medals and one bronze over the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. Her wins included the 400m freestyle, 400m individual medley, 200m individual medley, and 200m butterfly—just the third swimmer in history to win that many individual events at a single World Championships.

In the final event, the 800m freestyle, McIntosh led for much of the race before finishing strong with a bronze in 8:07.29—still the second-fastest time of her career and the 10th-fastest ever .

Record-Setting Excellence

  • 400m IM: Delivered a blistering 4:25.78, setting a new Championship Record and ranking 3rd all-time behind her own world record of 4:23.65.

  • 200m butterfly: Swam 2:01.99 to break the Championship Record, narrowly missing the long-standing 2009 world record by just 0.18 seconds.

  • She was named Swimmer of the Meet, sharing the title with Leon Marchand—recognized as one of the most dominant individual performances in recent history.

Why She’s This Week’s Choice

  • Unmatched consistency: Medaled in all five individual events she swam, maintaining elite pace through a grueling schedule.

  • World-class presence: Nearly tied one world record while crushing championship records across multiple events.

  • Canadian and GTA pride: Born in Toronto, McIntosh continues to represent GTA power swimming globally, now training under Bob Bowman’s elite program in Austin for the road ahead.

What McIntosh Said

On her 400m freestyle gold, she reflected:

“I hate losing more than I like winning and I think that’s a mentality that I’ve carried with myself throughout my entire career,” McIntosh said. “That’s really what gets my hand on the wall first most of the time.”

For her relentless medal haul, record-breaking swims, and global impact—Summer McIntosh is firmly our GTA Weekly Sports Athlete of the Week.
