Tara Anderson appointed City of Toronto Auditor General

Today, Toronto City Council appointed Tara Anderson as Toronto’s Auditor General for a seven-year term, effective December 17.

Tara Anderson is currently Assistant Auditor General with the Toronto Auditor General’s office, leading the portfolios for the audits of the Toronto Police Service and TTC for more than four years.

Anderson has a demonstrated track record of success in auditing and accounting, ensuring transparency and accountability in the complex public sector environment for more than 25 years. Her experience includes the Offices of the Auditor General of both Ontario and British Columbia, Internal Audit & Advisory Services in the B.C. government, as well as the Interior Health Authority of B.C. She was also a Senior Audit & Assurance Manager with KPMG.

Anderson is a Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor, and graduated from Brock University with a Bachelor of Accounting honours degree and obtained a professional specialization certificate in Performance Management from the University of Victoria.

The Auditor General is an independent officer, appointed by and reporting to Council, whose powers and duties are set out in the City of Toronto Act, 2006. The Auditor General is responsible for assisting Council in holding itself and City administrators accountable for the quality of stewardship over public funds and achievement of value for money in City operations. The Auditor General’s Office is independent of City management and has the authority to conduct financial, operational, compliance, information systems, forensic and other special reviews of most City departments; City agencies and corporations; local boards provided for under the City of Toronto Act; and other entities the City is related to or has an interest in.

Anderson will begin her term following the end of the term of the current Auditor General, Beverly Romeo-Beehler. Romeo-Beehler has been the City’s Auditor General since 2015 and will complete her term effective December 16.
