Toronto, ON — In an emotional and celebratory homecoming, Grammy-winning artist and global superstar Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye was awarded the Key to the City of Toronto by Mayor Olivia Chow on Saturday, just hours before beginning a four-night concert series at Rogers Centre.
The ceremony, held by the City of Toronto and attended by local officials and supporters, marked a symbolic recognition of The Weeknd’s extraordinary artistic legacy, humanitarian contributions, and impact as a cultural ambassador for Toronto.
A Weekend to Remember
To commemorate the moment, Mayor Chow officially declared July 26–27, 2025 as “Weeknd Weekend” in Toronto, aligning with the artist’s highly anticipated series of stadium shows. The concerts—set to draw tens of thousands of fans—underscore The Weeknd’s unique connection to his hometown and his continuing influence on the global stage.
“Born in Toronto, Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye represents the best of our city,” said Mayor Chow. “From Scarborough to the global stage, he has reshaped modern music while using his platform to support health and humanitarian causes at home and around the world. I am proud to honour one of our city’s greatest artists with a Key to the City.”
From Scarborough to Superstardom
Born and raised in Scarborough, The Weeknd’s musical journey began in Toronto’s east end, where he first gained traction anonymously posting songs to YouTube in 2010. A year later, his debut performance at the Mod Club Theatre signaled the rise of a new voice in alternative R&B.
His breakout trilogy of mixtapes—including House of Balloons—established him as a genre-defining artist. In 2021, he became the first Canadian to solo headline the Super Bowl halftime show, a milestone moment for both his career and Canadian music.
Giving Back Locally and Globally
Beyond chart-topping success, The Weeknd has made a significant mark through philanthropy and community-building. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he donated $500,000 to the Scarborough Health Network, reinforcing his lasting connection to the community that shaped him.
The artist has also contributed to Ethiopian Studies at the University of Toronto and co-founded HXOUSE, an innovative creative incubator for young talent located on Toronto’s waterfront.
To mark this latest honour, The Weeknd and Live Nation announced further investments in youth-focused initiatives at Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, his former high school, and the Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough. These projects aim to provide young people with creative spaces to learn, connect, and express themselves.
“Toronto is where I found my voice, and I’m committed to helping the next generation find theirs,” said The Weeknd during the ceremony. “That’s why I’m proud to support the Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough and my former high school, Birchmount Park, providing youth with the means to unlock their full potential.”
A Global Force for Good
Since 2020, The Weeknd has donated more than $10 million to global causes, including the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, the United Nations World Food Programme, and racial justice initiatives. His efforts earned him the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award in 2021.
