Toronto Elections has been made aware that the mail-in voting drop box located at Wellesley Community Centre at 495 Sherbourne St. was vandalized at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6. The City of Toronto is cooperating with the Toronto Police Service as they investigate this incident.
Between June 1 and 15, mail-in voting drop box locations are emptied daily and monitored by security cameras. The drop box located at Wellesley Community Centre was last emptied at 9:45 a.m. on June 6. Toronto Elections estimates that approximately seven completed mail-in voting packages were damaged in this incident.
Voters who dropped off their completed mail-in voting package at Wellesley Community Centre on June 6 between 9:45 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. are asked to contact Toronto Elections to review the options available to them to ensure their vote is counted. Those voters may call 416-338-1111 and press option 5 or email VoteByMail@toronto.ca.
In response to this incident, Toronto Elections will move all drop boxes inside the locations where they are currently placed. Drop boxes will only be available during each building’s operating hours. Details will be posted on the Toronto Elections mail-in voting drop box location webpage: www.toronto.ca/city-government
Mail-in voting
Voters who applied to vote by mail are reminded that completed mail-in voting packages are due by Thursday, June 15 at noon. Packages can be returned by Canada Post or a mail-in voting drop box but must arrive by the deadline to be counted.
