Toronto, ON – As extreme heat events become more frequent due to climate change, the City of Toronto is investing in climate resilience through a new $200,000 pilot program to deliver free air conditioners to low-income seniors.
Through the Air Conditioning Assistance Program, more than 380 units have already been delivered and installed across the city since early July, with a target of 500 total units this summer.
No-Cost In-Suite Installation
Each unit is installed directly in the recipient’s home at no cost, with coordination handled by City staff. This ensures that seniors living on fixed incomes can stay cool without worrying about the expense of equipment or installation.

Expanding Toronto’s Cool Spaces
To complement the air conditioner rollout, the City’s Heat Relief Network now offers over 500 Cool Spaces citywide, including libraries, community centres, and pools. The Metro Hall Rotunda is also open 24/7 during heat warnings as a designated cooling centre.
Leadership Comments
“Everyone needs a safe and comfortable place to call home. This year, we have already seen three historic heat waves which can be dangerous and even deadly. At City Hall, we are stepping up with a new pilot program to provide 500 free air conditioners to low-income seniors, who are the most vulnerable.”
— Mayor Olivia Chow
“This is a great pilot program and an example of the supports we must continue developing in response to the increase in extreme hot weather Toronto is expected to experience in the coming years.”
— Councillor Paula Fletcher (Toronto-Danforth)
